Category 01

Glassware

The vessels that hold, mix, measure, and heat. Almost all of it is borosilicate glass — low thermal expansion, so it shrugs off temperature shocks that would crack ordinary glass.

Beaker

The workhorse container. Used for stirring, mixing, heating liquids, and rough volume estimates — never for precise measurement, since the printed marks are only approximate.

Erlenmeyer Flask

The cone shape lets you swirl contents vigorously without splashing, and the narrow neck is easy to stopper. Ideal for titrations and cultures where you mix a lot.

Graduated Cylinder

Tall and narrow for accurate volume readings — read at the bottom of the meniscus, at eye level. The go-to when a beaker isn't precise enough.

Instruments

Powered equipment that measures, separates, magnifies, or heats with more control than the bench alone can offer.

Microscope

Magnifies samples far beyond the eye's reach. Compound light models handle most teaching and clinical work; stereo and electron scopes cover the extremes of scale.

Spins samples at high speed so denser components sink to the bottom. Essential for separating blood, isolating cells, and clarifying suspensions.

Bunsen Burner

A single gas flame with an adjustable air intake. The classic heat source for sterilising loops and heating glassware — the blue roaring flame is the hot one.

Before you buy

Five things to check

  1. Match precision to the jobA beaker and a graduated cylinder both hold liquid — only one measures it. Don't overpay for accuracy you don't need, or under-buy for work that demands it.
  2. Borosilicate over soda-limeFor anything heated, insist on borosilicate glass. Soda-lime is cheaper but cracks under thermal shock.
  3. Check calibration & serviceBalances, pH meters, and centrifuges need periodic calibration. Confirm the vendor offers service and traceable certificates.
  4. Consumables add upPipette tips, cuvettes, and filters are recurring costs. Factor them in — the cheap instrument with pricey consumables often wins on paper only.
  5. Safety is not optionalFume hoods and autoclaves are certified equipment. Buy from established suppliers and keep documentation for audits.
